Beginning Friday, May 1st and continuing every Friday in May (starting at 5:30pm), the Asheville community will gather in Pack Square to honor our family members and loved ones who have disappeared from our community due to inhumane immigration policies.

Please wear black.

Bring photos or names of family or friends affected.

Festival on 4/18 Raises Money for our Scholarship fund

On April 18th 2009 HOLA held its 3rd annual scholarship festival in the UNC Asheville Quad. The festival included a whole line up of music and dance performances, headlining act the B*Side Players all the way from San Diego, booths from student organizations, non profits, and local vendors, a silent auction, food, a yard sale, children’s games, face-painting, henna, and more. Everyone who attended had a fun time. All proceeds from the festival are going towards a scholarship for a local Latin@ student to attend UNC Asheville. Thank you to everyone who supported us! HOLA is still raising money in order to start a scholarship. Please attend our fundraising events. Checks should be made out to UNC Asheville HOLA, scholarship fund on the for line.

On March 31st around 200 students, faculty, staff, and community members gathered on UNC Asheville’s quad to say that ALL qualified students should have the opportunity to access higher education.

UNC Asheville’s Week of Action for College Access

HOLA and C4CA at UNCA have organized A Week of Action For College Access to protest the statewide ban against undocumented students enrolling in North Carolina community colleges.

Events taking place during the Week of Action include:

Student Realities Workshop

Wednesday, March 25th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

An interactive workshop that will explore education and college access from the perspectives of immigrant students.

Monday, March 30th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Walkout and Rally

Tuesday, March 31 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

The Quad (rain location is the Highsmith Union Grotto)

This walkout is in protest of the banning of undocumented students from attending community colleges.

Tomato Cocina Latina: 1455 Patton Avenue

Tomato Cocina Latina will be donating 10% of their profits to HOLA’s Latin@ Scholarship. You can come at any time between 3 and 9, but if you would like to join HOLA for dinner please RSVP at hola.unca@gmail.com. We will go as a group at 6:00 p.m.

These events are held in conjunction with the North Carolina Coalition for College Access (NCC4CA). There will be actions in the upcoming weeks on campuses across the state, including: UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, UNC Asheville, North Carolina State University, and North Carolina A&T University, and Warren Wilson College. NCC4CA’s goal is to defend the right to college access through policy advocacy, education, and service.

Student Rally to Promote Access to Higher Education for All

Statewide, Grassroots, Student-Led Coalition seeks to protest ban against undocumented students into Community Colleges in North Carolina

North Carolina—Students from all across the state of North Carolina will come together on Tuesday, March 31^st, 2009 to host several walkouts/rallies demonstrating their disapproval of the decision denying undocumented students admission to North Carolina community colleges. Students from NC State, UNC Asheville, UNC Charlotte, UNC Chapel Hill, and North Carolina A&T, as well as from many private and community colleges will participate in the movement to provide justice to those impacted by these severe state measures.

The Coalition for College Access was created on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill in response to the decision by the US Attorney General to provide individual states discretion in addressing undocumented status and access to education. In August, Former Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue supported a motion to maintain the admission ban while a comprehensive study was conducted assessing the impact of the undocumented population. The Coalition then expanded to various UNC-system schools and community colleges across the state, continuing to build support among peers and community members.

On Tuesday, March 31^st, various campuses will present speakers and community advocates educating students about the current state of the university and community college systems. In addition to the rally, many campuses will host workshops leading up to the event to garner support and inform students of the social and economic impact of undocumented persons.

In partnership with Adelante Education Coalition, the Coalition for College Access seeks to promote the importance of education. Each individual, regardless of citizenship status, deserves the right to pursue a college education. “These students are not taking away seats from North Carolina citizens and they pay out-of-state tuition,” stated NC State Coalition representative Jezzette Rivera. “If our society truly values education, we must make it accessible to all.”
